Bishkek Day Trips: Ala-Archa or Burana & Konorchek

Why this trip

Bishkek sits at the foot of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, and you do not need a week to reach real mountains. This page covers two different day trips. Pick one, or book both on consecutive days.

Ala-Archa is a national park in a gorge about 40 km south of the city. The road runs 12 km past the park gate to a trailhead at roughly 2,100 m, and from there trails climb towards the glaciers of the range, whose highest summit, Semenov-Tian-Shansky, reaches 4,895 m. It is the easiest way to stand under big peaks on your first or last day in Kyrgyzstan.

Burana and Konorchek is the eastern day. Burana Tower, near Tokmok about 80 km from Bishkek, is an 11th-century minaret and the main surviving structure of the medieval city of Balasagun, part of the Silk Roads World Heritage listing since 2014. Further east, in the Boom gorge, the Konorchek canyons are a maze of red sandstone walls you walk into on foot.

The two options, hour by hour

Option A — Ala-Archa gorge

1. 08:30

   Pickup at your Bishkek hotel

   South out of the city to the park gate, then 12 km up the gorge to the trailhead at about 2,100 m.

2. 10:00

   Walk: river trail or Ak-Sai waterfall

   The river trail follows the valley floor and suits anyone. The Ak-Sai trail climbs steeply to the waterfall, about 2–3 hours up with roughly 600 m of ascent. The guide sets the pace; you can turn round whenever you like.

3. 15:30

   Back down, drive to Bishkek

   Return to the car and drive back to the city — roughly an hour, depending on traffic. Drop-off at your hotel by late afternoon.

Option B — Burana Tower + Konorchek canyons

1. 08:00

   Pickup, east to Burana

   About 80 km east to Burana near Tokmok. The tower stands about 25 m today; it was around 45 m before earthquakes took the top. Around it: stone grave figures called balbals, and a small museum of finds from Balasagun.

   Into the Boom gorge — Konorchek

   On along the road towards Issyk-Kul to the start of the walk in the Boom gorge. The walk to the main canyon takes under an hour, with a few easy rock scrambles; with side branches, plan 2–3 hours on foot. There is little shade, so bring water and a hat.

   Drive back to Bishkek

   Konorchek is roughly 120–140 km from the city, so expect around two hours on the road. Drop-off at your hotel in the evening.
